On Sunday we (most of the people from Funi's birthday party) headed to Lantau island. The biggest tourist attraction there is the Giand Buddha, which was nice. But there are also several other places worth a visit. The Buddha is located near the Po Lin monastery, which was also very nice. You can get a peek to monks' everyday life by wandering around the monastery area. Nearby is also the Wisdom Path, and there are some huge wooden poles standing in circles. The view from the top of a hill near the poles is spectacular. There is also a hiking trail to Lantau Peak, but the weather was too cloudy and we didn't have the time to go there. But I'll definetly go to the Peak someday. Here are some pictures:

In addition we went to Tai O, which is a fishing village in South shore of Lantau. It is a whole different world, and just 30 minutes away from the center of Hong Kong. Few pictures of Tai O also:

A guy fishing in front of his house, the water did not look like I'd be eating the fish...

The fish markets are always like this, fishes, crabs etc. are kept alive in tanks:

Or like this, everything is dried:

How to get there

There are at least two ways to get to Lantau. We took a ferry from HK island (ferry piers near Central, pier 6) to Mui Wo, and from there a bus number 2 to the Buddha. From the Buddha we took bus number 21 to Tai O, and from there bus number 11 to Tung Chung, where there is a MTR station (metro). From Tung Chung you soon can take the Skyrail straight to Buddha and I think it will be the best and fastest way to get there. The price is not bad either (88$ for return ticket) since the ferry+bus costs about 50$. The MTR from Central to Tung Chung is ~20$.
